Can I walk into a tattoo shop without an appointment?

Many street shops keep artists on rotation exactly for walk-ins — flash designs and small pieces are often done the same day. Custom studios usually work by appointment only, with a consultation first and a deposit that counts toward the final price. Look for the walk-ins badge in our listings, and call ahead: even walk-in shops fill their chairs on weekends.

How old do you have to be to get a tattoo?

In every US state you must be 18 to get a tattoo on your own, and shops check photo ID. Some states allow minors to be tattooed with a parent present and written consent, while others ban it entirely regardless of consent — the shop will know the local rule. Piercing rules are looser in many states, but ID and a signed consent form are still standard.

Do tattoo shops do piercings too?

Often, but not always — piercing is a separate license and a separate craft. Studios with a dedicated piercer usually offer ears, nose, septum and body piercings with implant-grade jewelry, and their piercing hours can differ from tattoo hours.
